The purchase of 178 laptops for the new members of the Chamber of Deputies was carried out without public tender "because they are not a state purchase" according to outgoing Chamber president Alfredo Pacheco. He explained that they were bought at a price below their market value, as reported by Diario Libre. "We do not have to hold a tender for this purchase because it is not a state purchase, but rather a purchase for each lawmaker, which they will have to pay back in monthly installments of RD$2,000" said Pacheco. The laptops cost US$2,182 each for a total of US$388,396.00 (RD$12.28 million). The company that supplied the equipment was not named. Pacheco, who aspired to be voted mayor of Santo Domingo, did not run again in the Chamber of Deputies.
