The Haitian and Dominican authorities allowed the bi-national market on the border with Haiti to go ahead today. The Ministry of Public Health announced that it was carrying out medical inspections in the surrounding areas and installed baths and mobile hand washing points for traders and other people attending the market. Hospitals near the border markets were prepared with special areas set up to treat any cases of cholera.
Hoy reports that the country has increased its monitoring to prevent the entry of cholera to the DR. The Ministry of Public Health said that Haitians who attend the market to buy or sell would be limited to the restricted areas.
Dominican authorities announced that the free passage and circulation of Haitians to Dajabon, Jimani and Elias Pina during market day has been restricted as part of sanitary controls in place at the moment. The measures are being taken in response to the resurgence of cases of cholera in Haiti and reports of the first nine cases in Port-au-Prince.
Ministry of Public Health officials have been working in border provinces to educate the public on how to prevent the spread of cholera.
