The Fundacion Carso Los Haitises-FUNKARST will administer the Los Haitises National Park, to the north of Punta Cana. The co-management agreement was signed by Environment Minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and Frank Rainieri, president of Funkarst. Members of the board of Funkarst are Manuel Aurelio Despradel Garcia, Ramon Ernesto Prieto Vicioso, Domingo Abreu Collado, Bernardo Vega and Horacio Ornes.
The agreement seeks to ensure community participation in the park management. An advisory board will be set up with the participation of the vice minister of protected areas and biodiversity of the Ministry of Environment, two representatives of Funkarst, representatives of the city governments of Sabana de la Mar, Sabana Grande de Boya, Association for the Development of Monte Plata (Ademopla), Committee for the Development of the Province of Hato Mayor (Codeprham), Movement of United Farm Communities (MCCU), Board for the Touristic and Ecological Development of Sabana de la Mar, El Valle, Las Canitas (Savamaca), and environmental directors of the provinces of Hato Mayor, Monte Plata and the administrator of the Los Haitises National Park.
Los Haitises made democratic history in the DR after nationwide support against the construction of a cement plant in its environs galvanized the nation last year. The cement plant had the support of the President and the Minister of Environment.
The authorities withdrew their permission for the construction following recommendations against the plant made in a UN report contracted by the government as a result of the public outcry.
