The recent United Nations Development Report criticizes governments in the Dominican Republic for not making the necessary investments in social services n namely health and education. In a page two editorial today, Diario Libre points out that Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa is complaining that the government has no funds for capital investments.
"We all know that resources are always scarce, but for the past 30 years our governments have handled such an impressive amount of resources that there is no valid excuse for our people's current state of development.
"From 1996 to date the budgets have been enormous and the sums have gone up in smoke and waste. The truth has to be said that if there had been a good system of planning and honest politics the public works would have been carried out with much fewer resources. This country is not where it is because of a lack of resources. Our governments have been incapable of continuing works, in the same way they are incapable of maintaining what they build. This does not seem to be in the genes of our politicians, who to put it bluntly are only capable of being good administrators of their personal fortunes.
We need more good people in politics. We need to demand the fulfillment of the laws. We need to demonstrate to our leaders that we are not subject to anyone, but owners of our own destiny. That demands sacrifices, but we have to do this for our children", writes Adriano Miguel Tejada.
