An increasing amount of evidence confirms Peravia Senator Wilton Guerrero's statement in response to the 2008 murders of six drug traffickers in Paya, Bani. Guerrero said at the time that there were many rotten apples in the nation's security forces and accused the government of complicity with drug traffickers.
According to a report in Listin Diario, with the recent arrest of the anti-drug division of the Police in San Francisco de Macoris, 34 officers and subordinates have been sent to justice for trafficking this year.
The newspaper reports that 5,000 members of the Armed Forces, the Police and the National Drug Control Department have been sent to justice, or expelled from their institutions in the past three years. The list includes six high-ranking officers who headed the anti-drug units in Santiago, Montecristi, San Francisco de Macoris, El Seibo, La Romana and Santo Domingo. DNCD spokesman Colonel Alcides Rodriguez said that many have been separated for the ranks for negligence in their duties.
