A Haitian national was sent to the municipal hospital in Laguna Salada in the province of Valverde for urgent treatment over the weekend. He was kept in isolation while tests were carried out to establish whether he was infected with cholera. According to a report in El Caribe, the patient, Agustin Jean, displayed all the typical symptoms of the disease: vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The report says that Jean crossed the frontier on foot last Thursday, and was severely dehydrated on arrival at the hospital. Yesterday afternoon the Minister of Public Health, Bautista Rojas Gomez, told reporters from Listin Diario that the 55-year old man was rehydrated, stabilized and returned to Haiti. He said that a quick test for cholera had proved negative. Another sample was sent to a reference lab in Santiago.
El Nuevo Diario reports that the latest figures from Haiti placed the death toll at 917, and the total number of cases at 14,600.
Public Health Minister Rojas Gomez says that a positive outcome of the cholera scare in the Dominican Republic is that hygiene has improved overall. He said that cases of diarrhea in general have declined as a result.
