The weekend saw a lot of baseball of all varieties, from great pitching for naught due to poor fielding that led to defeat, to even better, no-hit pitching that led to victory. On Friday evening the Tigres del Licey took advantage of the really poor fielding efforts by the Aguilas Cibaenas to defeat them by a score of 3-2 at the Quisqueya Park in Santo Domingo. Angel Castro took the mound for the Aguilas and pitched scoreless ball for five innings and the Aguilas even had a 1-0 lead until five errors in the field led to the defeat and the Tigres' third straight win.
In San Francisco de Macoris, the Gigantes defeated the Toros del Este by a score of 9-4. The 14-hit attack was sustained by four, yes four, homeruns in the first four innings by Esteban German, Ricardo Nanita and Alexi Castillo. In San Pedro de Macoris, the Estrellas fell to the Leones del Escogido, 7-6.
On Saturday, the Estrellas del Oriente turned around and defeated the Gigantes 6-4, in a game played at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris. The Tigres del Licey continued their improvement and defeated the Toros del Este 5-2 at the Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo. Robinson Diaz struck the big blow. And in the pitching gem of the entire weekend, Eduard Valdez struck out 11, gave up three bases on balls and pitched no-hit baseball for seven innings, as Escogido shut out the Aguilas at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago, 3-0, their third straight loss.
As the saying goes, "a baseball is round and comes in a square box" - anything is possible in the game. On Sunday the Aguilas returned the favor to the Leones del Escogido and defeated them 4-2 at the Quisqueya Ballpark. With the victory, the Aguilas stopped a three-game losing streak, and go into the one day break at 2-7 over the past nine games and a couple of bright lights that were included in the lineup. One is Bartolo Colon, the former big league great who showed that there is still a lot of energy in the arm as he pitched five shutout innings, fanning six and giving up just two hits. The second is the arrival on the scene of Hector Luna who got three hits and Dionis Cesar who debuted with two runs-batted-in. The Aguilas are still in the cellar as the tournament reaches the halfway point. In San Francisco de Macoris, the powerful Gigantes climbed all over the league-leading Estrellas Orientales, 11-3. Matt McBride hit two homeruns, one of them with the bases loaded, and Brad Nelson also had a homerun. And, finally, the Tigres del Licey extended their winning streak to five games with a solid victory over the Toros del Este at the Francisco Micheli Stadium in La Romana, 4-2.
