It may take the cholera scare to stop the used clothing and shoes business. While late Customs director Miguel Cocco spent years trying to stop used clothing imports, he did not succeed in the task. On Monday Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez banned the trade in used clothing across the border as part of the sanitary controls that have been introduced in response to the cholera outbreak in Haiti.
The used clothing is sent to Haiti in the form of charitable donations, mainly from the US, but a large part ends up being sold in border markets or sent in large packs to stores in the DR. Haitian used clothing traders then use the funds to buy Dominican provisions to sell in Haiti.
