The president of the National Drugs Council, Mabel Feliz Baez has called for the dismantling or re-structuring of the National Police and the Armed Forces to create institutions with staff capable of fighting crime, especially drug trafficking. She said that until this happens members of the Police and Armed Forces will continue to engage in crime. She pointed to the recent case where the chief of the anti-drug unit in San Francisco de Macoris was caught with a 400-kilo cocaine shipment.
"Neither the Armed Forces nor the Police are prepared to fight crime," she said when interviewed on the Matinal program on Channel 5. She said it is notable that in every case where drugs are confiscated, an active or former member of the military or police is involved.
Feliz believes that the force should be made up of new professionals with a different mentality, and who are aware of the role they need to play.
