7dias.com.do (http://7dias.com.do) reports that the mastermind behind the murder attempt against lawyer and TV host Jordi Veras is thought to be Adriano Roman who is in jail for the attempted murder of his wife Miguelina Llaverias. Roman allegedly contracted the killing of the lawyer, who represented Miguelina Llaverias in court. Reportedly, Roman hired Francisco Alberto Carela Castro through his brother Engel Carela to murder Veras. Francisco Carela is reported to have subcontracted two men to commit the failed murder. He is being linked to a ring that filmed couples in motels for purposes of blackmail.
Roman was sentenced to 20 years in jail for attempting to kill Llaverias in May 2007. Veras lost his sight in one eye after surviving a murder attempt on 2 June 2010 in Santiago. He was ambushed when entering the parking lot of Channel 25 in Santiago at around 6:25am.
Diario Libre reports that a payment of RD$1.5 million was agreed on for the killing of Jordi Veras, and a RD$200,000 advance payment made. Reportedly, the mastermind behind the contract demanded the fulfillment of the agreement before honoring the total payment of the agreed upon amount. Jordi Veras and family recently left the country, fearing for his life. Jordi's father, lawyer Negro Veras had revealed other murder attempts against his son following the first failure.
Reportedly, there is a tape recording made in Rafey Prison in Santiago where the conditions of payment are set out. The authorities reportedly have the tape, after Carela Castro was arrested in an operation in which equipment, videos and documents were seized.
Diario Libre made contact with a person with supposed ties to the mastermind, who confirmed that he had been commissioned to make sure the tape was delivered with the warning that a copy of it would be delivered to Negro Veras, in case the agreed upon sum was not delivered.
The attempted murder of Jordi Veras was planned for 16 May, the day of the congressional and municipal elections, but the plot was not carried out.
Roberto Zabala Espinosa, a former police lieutenant, is also under arrest for his ties to the alleged blackmail ring and is being investigated in connection with the murder attempt.
The Prosecutor General Office confirmed on Tuesday that their investigations indicate that the murder attempt against Jordi Veras was ordered by Adriano Roman. As reported in El Nuevo Diario, Roman contacted Franklin Reynoso, who was serving a 30 year sentence in Rafey for murder. Reynoso had excellent relations with Engel Carela, who had been sentenced to 20 years in the case of the attempted murder against Miguelina Llaverias. Francisco Carela Castro would meet in jail with Engel Carela and Franklin Reynoso. They would subsequently agree that Roman would pay RD$1.5 million for the murder of Jordi Veras, but this would have to happen before the election day of 16 May 2010.
