Not sure if this is the spot for this, but I was just wondering about the beach by Blackbeards.

I'm leaving in a couple of days for BB's, and I was wondering if the beach and water were any good for snorkelling. Last time I went down it was 2006, and the waves were so bad I stayed out of the water completley. Looking on google earth, there looks to be some pretty good reefs not to far offshore.

If anybody has any input, or sugestions, they would all be greatly appreciated.

Regardless, I plan on taking as many pics as I can, and posting a report when I get home.

Thanks very much

I went swimming in Costambar (about 1/4 mile north/west of BB). The beach was beautiful, but the shallow, rugged bottom did not make for a pleasant swim. I must have been on-top of one of the reefs you saw on Google Earth.

I have not been to Costambar Beach for couple of years ...

The two times I was there the beach was unkept, and when I went for a walk I was gang raped by 1,000,000 sand flies.

Had a mild allergic reaction, major itching and HUGE red welts all over my legs.

It may or may not be an issue now, but if you are going to Costambar Beach ... it might be an idea to spray with Deet and do a recon ....

I was there this past Sept. It was on a Sun, so it was family day. Lots of people on the beach and in the ocean. I have to agree with BlueDevil the beach was beautiful. I didn't see any snorkeling, but did see some guys in scuba gear.
There are some little shacks / bars along the beach and a few across the street from the beach.

Hwyrider's post reminded me that I have a few old pics on file. These shots were taken in 2006 on the beach just outside my condo in Costumbar:

I believe the condo associations adjacent to this part of Costumbar beach maintained it.

There is an industrial plant up-current at Puerto Plata. Some locals claim the water at Costambar is (or can be from time to time) polluted. Obviously those with commercial interests in the area (bars, apartments, etc) deny this. I have no idea if there is any truth in it.

I left the images big so you can see all the garbage that's always there.

The quality and safety of the water and swimming there has been in question for years.

I did a little swimming/snorkeling there, east of the point, last visit. There are some shallow reefs (VERY shallow, maybe uncovering at high tide) a few yards out. Nothing much to see but some little fish and a fair number of sea urchins.

I don't see much in the way of polluting industries in Puerto Plata proper. There are some settling basins by way of a "residual water treatment plant" on the west side of town, and of course the two oil-fueled electric power plants (one on the Costambar side of the bay). Tourism looks like the major industry of Puerto Plata, any more.

I can show you a couple of discharges into the sea near Costambar beach that would convince you to never step foot in the water at the beach.

As is often said, ignorance is bliss.

One accidental discharge from one plant for a few minutes could pollute a beach for weeks or months.

I just got back, and the visibility in the water made snorkelling a exercise in futility. Very shallow, and not really much to look at. The waves were huge, and just stirred up all the silt.

On the plus side though, the beach and water seemed clean, and had a great time at one of the little bars down there, drinking and dancing with some chicas till the wee hours..

That's OK. I never even told Dunedin that the doggy bag he brought me back had nothing but soggy french fries! :-) Besides, it was worth it to get back in time to judge the bikini contest at BB. Closest I got to fish that day!

I went back to Pasqual's a couple of days later and tried it. It was great!
