President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated a housing project for the victims of Hurricane Georges (1998) in southwestern Azua yesterday. He was also in Azua to inaugurate aqueducts, streets, schools, bridges and other projects, all built at a cost of more than RD$706 million. Speaking to reporters after the event, he said that he was relieved to see the project completed at last.

Diario Libre reports that Fernandez inaugurated the Villas Palmarejo housing project that has 101 dwellings. Other projects inaugurated were 28 aqueducts, 33 schools, bridges, rural electrification projects and the highway between Azua and Pueblo Viejo. The projects are located in Azua, and the provinces of San Cristobal, Peravia, Barahona, Bahoruco, San Jose de Ocoa and Elias Pina.

The President inaugurated the project at the Cacique Enriquillo High School in Pueblo Viejo, Azua. The project was blessed by the Bishop of San Juan de la Maguana, Monsignor Jose Dolores Grullon. Reporters on the scene observed that unlike other recent events attended by the President, there were no calls for his re-election. Once the formalities were over, a large number of the people who were given houses began to move their possessions into the new homes that were built by the National Assistance and Housing Institute (INAVI).
