The Meteoro Battery Company will begin operations at a new factory in Haina, under the concept of "the Green Battery", with an investment of US$8.5 million financed by the BDI, Lopez de Haro, Proamerica and Popular Dominicano banks. Company president Jose Antonio Rodriguez Jimenez, together with Juan Arturo Biaggi and other project executives, released details on the new venture. The new Green Battery (Bateria Verde) factory is already in operation and employs 300 workers. A formal inauguration is planned for January 2011.

The new plant will also supply recycled materials to the companies that manufacture galvanized articles and tools. These companies can acquire the materials continuously without having to import lead, saving hard currency and time with customs paperwork. The green production is a business vision that respects the Basel Convention, whose strategic aims include ensuring that products, goods and services that are offered on the world market are clean, which means being free of pollutants. Rodriguez explained that what they are trying to do is neutralize heavy metals that are linked to lead products. He went on to explain that the new installations of Meteoro Batteries would use world-renowned advanced technology exclusively for the industry that recycles lead and polypropylene, but subject to the rules of the Basel Convention. He said that the factory would have a rotating oven with computerized procedures capable of classifying secondary products and sub-products with the adequate composition in each step of the process and the watches that the waste is totally inert.

The Haina industrial zone has received special attention after severe pollution in the area caused by battery factories in the past.
