The attempt on the life of the lawyer and journalist Jordi Veras Rodriguez was planned by Adriano Roman from his cell in the Rafey Jail in Santiago, Santiago prosecutor Jenny Berenice Reynoso told the press yesterday. She said that their preliminary investigations had found that to carry out his plan, Roman enlisted the help of former policemen, active police agents and cellmates. Other individuals that prosecutors are implicating in the attempt have been identified as former policeman Francisco Alberto Carela Castro (Frank Castro), who is also said to be the head of a network of blackmailers, former first lieutenant Roberto Zabala Espinosa, former sergeant Candy Caminero Rodriguez and sergeant major Arturo J. Ferreras del Castillo (Moreno), inmate Franklin Reynoso Moronta and Engels Carela Castro, brother of Francisco Alberto.

The prosecutors say that the contract killers asked Roman for the sum of 2.5 million pesos, which he said was too high and in the end they agreed on RD$1.5 million. The report was presented by Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena, National Police Chief, Jose A. Polanco Gomez and Santiago District Attorney Jenny Berenice Reynoso.

Meanwhile, lawyer Ramon Antonio Veras (Negro), Jordi Veras' father, says that others are involved in the case. He issued a statement listing ten points for public consideration, including one that says: "We know... that more people are involved in the attempted crime against Jordi. I trust that the judicial and police investigators will continue to investigate until they complete the files". He also called on the authorities to cut off Adriano Roman's access to his fortune, which allowed him to pay for the hired killers.
