At least 21 former employees, some of whom had been fired by a Barrick construction work contractor in Cotui have been wounded by buckshot and blows from security personnel. Several vehicles were burned during yesterday's protest over the payment of workers' compensation for their dismissal.

The Company issued a press release saying that mining company personnel had also been injured, and said that the violent protest required "the assistance of the public force (police and military units) in order to guarantee the safety of the employees". Pueblo Viejo Corporation (Barrick Gold) employees were sent home until further notice.

Manuel Munoz, spokesman for the former employees called on Labor Minister Max Puig to make the company comply with the law.
