Research has shown that 50% of the residents of Villa Mella (National District) suffer from high blood pressure, according to a report by Diario Libre. Out of 400 people tested, 175 suffered from the condition, whereas 74 have asthma, 40 have diabetes, 24 with rheumatoid arthritis, and 9 have pulmonary tuberculosis. The research was conducted by doctors Keila West, Carmen Betances, Maria Francisco and Gladys Soto from the Dominican-Japanese Medical Education Center, who expressed concern about the results. Villa Mella is well known for the abundance of chicharrones (deep-fried pork rind) in people's diets.
