A woman who had been visiting family in Haiti was diagnosed with the first known case of cholera in the US, the Miami Herald reported yesterday. On Saturday, the first known case of cholera in the Dominican Republic had been reported. This again was attributed to someone who had been visiting relatives in Haiti before returning to work in the DR.

These are the first two people known to have taken cholera out of Haiti. The Miami Herald said the Collier County woman infected with the bacteria does not work in a job that puts her in close contact with the public, so chances are small that she might pass on the disease. The woman is recovering satisfactorily.

The Miami Herald said that more cases are expected in Florida, because the state has about 241,000 Haitian-born residents, many of whom travel back and forth frequently.

A Center for Disease Control and Prevention report says that just four cases of cholera were reported in the US from 1996 to 2006.
