El Dia reports today on the grisly discovery of a deep pit that is suspected of having been used as a torture center by a gang of contract killers. Basilio Perez Cuevas, one of two men accused of being contract killers, who was shot by the Police on Saturday, is said to be the owner of the place. At least three large water tanks on the site are thought to contain several victims' bodies covered with quicklime to hide the smell of decomposition. The pit was found at a site near the La Isabela (El Higuero) airport and the Duquesa garbage dump in northern Santo Domingo.
Police spokesman Nelson Rosario says there are leads that indicate that several bodies could be found in the pit. There have been difficulties in getting local residents to comment. The Police reported that the gang led by Perez Cuevas and another man, named as Kelvin Ramirez Castro planned to murder several people who have fought drug trafficking.
