Approximately 87,800 motor vehicles in the Dominican Republic use LPG as fuel, according to research by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, published in Clave weekly newspaper. This cost the state RD$1,483 billion in subsidies in 2005 alone, and the trend is that this year's cost will be greater. The number of vehicles running on gas increased by 145.3% between 2001 and 2005 as more vehicles migrate to the cheaper propane gas. Government officials would like to remove the subsidy, making the cost of fuel the same for all.
