The nation is mourning the loss of much loved Dominican TV personality and comedian Freddy Beras Goico, who died in a New York City hospital in the early hours of Thursday. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for the last four years and died just three days short of his 70th birthday.

Freddy Beras Goico's body will be brought home on a flight that will arrive at the Las Americas International Airport later today, and the public will be able to view the coffin and pay their respects from 9am on Saturday onwards at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, according to the family.

Beras Goico's son Giancarlo Beras-Goico Mejia said that they had considered using a sports stadium before deciding on Bellas Artes. "We still cannot say when the burial will take place, since this will be settled tomorrow", he said, and thanked the public for their expressions of sympathy. "We appreciate the prayers, the calls and the comments that have been made both publicly and privately in response to our father's illness", he told reporters.

Giancarlos Beras said that they received a call from President Leonel Fernandez and his wife, Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez yesterday morning. "In the name of our family, we give thanks to the President and Dona Margarita for the sentiments they expressed", he said.

Dominican TV stations have been showing special programs as a tribute to Freddy Beras Goico. Color Vision broadcast archive footage from Televisa, where Freddy worked for many years. The shows included comedies in which he featured along with humorists such as Cuquin Victoria, Cecilia Garcia, Luisito Marti, Felipe Polanco, Milton Pelaez, Roberto Salcedo, Estela Cuesta and Julio Cesar Medina.
