The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed the detection of three cases of cholera in the DR.

The second and third cases were diagnosed in a three-month old baby girl and her grandmother in Santo Domingo East.

Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez told Diario Libre reporters that the nation's hospitals have prepared isolation wards for any cholera cases that might occur.

Meanwhile, the Public Health and Education authorities are joining forces to launch a large-scale national outreach program on cholera today. The campaign includes teachers and students from schools across the country, as a complement to the work that the Ministry of Public Health has been doing at community level aimed at preventing the spread of the disease.

The number of people affected by cholera in the country still stands at three, after a suspected case in a Dominican missionary was discarded in Dajabon when she was hospitalized with symptoms suspected of being cholera. The missionary, Yisel Ramirez Valer, 28, was admitted to the Matias Ramon Mella Hospital after returning from Haiti and being examined by doctors at the frontier.

Bautista Rojas Gomez said that although several samples have been sent for laboratory tests, so far there has been no increase in the number of cases. He announced that Ministry of Education personnel have been trained for today's outreach program. They received the procedures and a teaching guide was provided for both students and teachers. "All over the country they are working from house to house, giving information and advice", he stated.
