Diario Libre features an article with accounts from several Haitians who have crossed the border several times, mainly thanks to payments and bribes to military and civilian officials. For example, as soon as "Pierre's" mother returned from Santo Domingo to Delmas, in Haiti, after the earthquake of 12 January, he told her: "Haiti is broken, Mama, I want to go with you". They also forced his sister to come to the Dominican Republic, all illegally, and in just eight days his mother obtained RD$3,000 for each one. She contacted a fellow Haitian, a member of a network that she said also included Dominicans, to put the children on a list. On the eighth day, taking advantage of the celebration of the traditional bi-national market day in Elias Pina, where there inspection is relatively lax, they left from Port-au-Prince at 6am. By 2pm, Pierre, 23, his sister, 22, and his mother had crossed the border, and then travelled 260 kilometers to Santo Domingo on board a normal bus. This is just one case of many revealed to the reporters.
