The Metropolitan Traffic Police (AMET) confiscated 2,500 vehicles this weekend in a sweep of un-renewed vehicle registrations. The vehicles that were seized are now subject to a RD$1000 fine, plus the normal RD$600 late fee for not renewing their registration in time. And it was so easy! Nearly 300 offices were set up all over the country and vehicle owners could also renew over the Internet. The vehicular total for the country was, in 2009, some 2,570,220 units with over a million motorcycles. About 645,000 cars and 228,000 SUVs were supposed to have renewed their registration. AMET chief General Sanz Jiminian has issued a warning to car owners not to go out on the streets without having renewed their registration.
