The Dominican Republic has had eight censuses since 1920, when the first was taken by the occupation government, under US supervision. Since then, the Dominican Republic has changed from a poor, uninhabited rural country into a country of 8.5 million largely urban people with signs of modernity but with profound social disparities. In 1920, the census was taken on 24 December under adverse conditions, and the population was calculated at 894,652. There were only 12 provinces: Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris, El Seibo, Azua, Barahona, Samana, Pacificador, Espaillat, La Vega, Santiago Puerto Plata and Monte Cristi. Santo Domingo Santiago, La Vega and Azua were the most populated areas. Santo Domingo had 146,652 inhabitants. By 1950 the population had reached 2.135 million and by 1970, 4 million. The 1981 census recorded 5.5 million, rising to 7.3 million in 1993.
