Several of the most outstanding figures in Dominican politics and public life have been taken by cancer. Hoy newspaper tells how veteran PRD leader and presidential candidate Jose Francisco Pena Gomez died of cancer just a few days before the local elections of 1998. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for more than four years, and was just 61 at the time of death. Former President Jacobo Majluta, who occupied the presidency for 43 days, died of lung cancer at 62. Jacinto Peynado, a leading member of the PRSC party, and a former Vice-President died of colon cancer in Miami when he was just 63. Figures such as Luisito Marti, one of the nation's best-known television personalities, passed away at the beginning of the year from stomach cancer. And now pancreatic cancer has taken Freddy Beras Boico, just days before his 70 birthday.
