The Federal Prosecutor in Puerto Rico has reported the arrest of 17 people after a Federal Grand Jury approved an indictment on 12 counts of drug trafficking against the members of Jose David Figueroa Agosto's network, in which Dominican Eddy Brito is named as one of the five leaders. Brito, who is the former husband of Figueroa Agosto's lover Sobeida Felix Morel, is expected to be requested in extradition from the Dominican Republic.
They are being accused of conspiring to import and distribute narcotics in Puerto Rico, reported the Federal Prosecutor, Rosa Emilia Rodriguez Velez, during a press conference together with the superintendent of Police, Jose Figueroa Sancha. Diario Libre says that Figueroa Agosto, alias Junior Capsula, is number one on the list. The forfeiture charges of the indictment add up to US$100 million. Figueroa Agosto is also accused, in a second indictment, of conspiracy to import more than 12,000 kilograms of cocaine into Puerto Rico between the years 2000 and 2001. The indictment was issued on 17 November. Besides the conspiracy charges, Figueroa Agosto faces another for being the leader, administering and organizing what is known at the federal level as an "on-going criminal enterprise". "This criminal enterprise had as its objective the distribution of large amounts of cocaine during its existence", added Rodriguez Velez.
