The IX National Population and Housing Census 2010 begins tomorrow. The process will continue until 30 November and it is expected to count 2,500,000 households. Although these are working days, the National Statistics Office (ONE in Spanish) is asking the public to ensure someone is at home during the weekend in order to speed up the process of collecting the data by the 44,000 census takers who are backed by 21,000 supervisors. During a press conference, ONE director Pablo Tactuk reported that the Census would cost RD$1 billion, of which RD$400 million was spent on supplies and training, and RD$600 million will be spent on the process of obtaining the data.

ONE expects that they will be able to give preliminary results on the total population by gender and province within a month. Later, in 10 months, they expect to have the other details that are collected in the census questionnaire. The process will begin this Wednesday with a reconnaissance of the territory, and the census will begin collecting information on Thursday, 25 November, starting at 8 in the morning until nighttime. Appointments will be made available for night visits by census takers for people out at work. ONE guaranteed that the families could open their doors to their personnel without any fears for their safety. See: www.censo2010.one.gob.do (http://www.censo2010.one.gob.do). Every Census worker will have a distinctive cap and name tag.
