The joint budget commission that is working on the 2011 budget will ask the Ministry of Hacienda for a modification of the projected budget so that a further RD$1 billion can be assigned to education. The money would come from the funds assigned to the President and to the Second Metro Line. The amount is insignificant, according to El Nuevo Diario, especially considering that 2% of GDP would be some RD$40 billion. However, the proposed change will be formally presented to the Minister of Hacienda, Vicente Bengoa, when he appears before the joint commission tomorrow. Bengoa has told the commission that it would be impossible to provide more money for education given the budgetary restraints the country has to face next year.
