Today marks the official beginning of the IX National Census of Population and Housing. This census comes eight years after the last one and will reveal how many people live in the country, their condition and other demographic variables. All this will help establish the best policies for the state, which is the fundamental reason for all censuses. According to Diario Libre, the process, which will end on 30 November, gets under way after several months of preparation. The budget for this census is around RD$1 billion, and will cover 2,500,000 homes all over the country. 44,000 census takers and 21,000 supervisors will be working to gather data in urban and rural areas beginning at 8 o'clock in the morning. During the week, each census taker will cover 80 homes in the cities and in the rural areas, 60, taking about 30 minutes for each visit. When the interview is over, the census taker, identified by a distinctive nametag and baseball cap, will place a sticker in a visible spot to show the home has been counted.

Today, the personnel will be reconnoitering the area they will be covering, according to Mildred Martinez from the National Statistical Office (ONE) Census Department. The census takers will identify the houses that they will be visiting and if people who work or have other obligations outside the home they may make an appointment for a more convenient time. This innovation was introduced because the census is taking place during working days, and ONE expects that many people will wait for the census takers in their houses over the weekend. Foreigners will be counted and so will the prison population after coordinating with the authorities.
