The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is preparing for 200,000 cases of cholera in Haiti over the next three months "due to the explosive nature of the epidemic". According to El Caribe, so far there have been more than 1,400 deaths from cholera in Haiti. PAHO deputy director, Dr. Jon K Andrus, said that they foresee "400,000 cases over the next 12 months". He said that cholera will not go away in the short term and that there is a risk that that the success of their work will be lost if there is no long-term management of the situation. The doctor said that the health system in Haiti was "overwhelmed" and that "they need everything: medicines, doctors, nurses, resources". He said that the basic issue is to guarantee a good water supply and improve the treatment of dirty water. He added that cholera has spread across almost all the country. He said that PAHO has been in contact with neighboring countries to prevent a possible expansion of the disease, as has happened in the Dominican Republic where there are at least four cases.
