President Leonel Fernandez headed a meeting of the National Cholera Commission yesterday and issued Directive Nineteen aimed at strengthening security measures along the frontier in order to counter the spread of the disease. The Armed Forces will join forces with the Migration Department on the frontline. Lt. General Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz revealed the details of the meeting during a press conference at the Presidential Palace's Orlando Martinez Hall. He said that Directive Nineteen states that the Armed Forces will be in charge of security along the frontier from Pepillo Salcedo to Pedernales. He said that Deputy Army Minister, Major General Antonio Campusano Lopez, would be the commanding general and in charge of all operations along the frontier and that the security agencies have identified nearly all the points illegal migrants use to enter the country, mentioning Elias Pina, Pedernales, Monte Cristi and Jimani. He added that they have asked the transport unions to instruct their members to stop carrying illegal migrants and to support these measures. According to Campusano, patrol boats are on duty at sea near Cabo Rojo and in Manzanillo.
