The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has suggested that the state should put a halt to the "San Souci" tourism and property development project due to the impact that it will have on the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Hoy newspaper says that UNESCO suggests drawing up a plan that will take the preservation of the special attributes of the Colonial Zone of the nation's capital into consideration. The UN agency suggests a halt to the future development of the buffer zone development, which will mainly affect the area of Santo Domingo East and could have negative repercussions on the exceptional universal value of this asset.

The UN suggestions were approved in Brazil in August and notified to the Dominican government on 13 September. The agency is suggesting that the new designs should be submitted to the World Heritage Center and that the government should pass laws that protect, safeguard and revitalize the cultural heritage.
