Nine people, including two engineers, lost their lives in an explosion of unknown origin at the PROMESE building construction site at Santo Domingo's Ciudad de la Salud health complex yesterday, according to a report in El Caribe.
A spokeswoman for the Ney Arias Lora Hospital, next door to the building that will house the Essential Medicines Program n Promese - said that the explosion and fire had not affected the hospital. Two people - a policeman and a Haitian worker - were also injured. The new building was scheduled for inauguration in December. Members of the Fire Department and National Police later removed six more bodies from the scene of the fire. Late last night, eight of the nine victims had been identified by the Institute of Forensic Pathology. According to Diario Libre, the agency identified two engineers, Rosa Maria Perez and Manuel de Jesus Antigua Diaz, and a housekeeper, Santa de la Cruz. Later they said that they had identified Ramon Antonio Lorenzo, Felix Payan Perez, Dionisio Peguero Maria, Jose Wilson Hernandez and Porfirio Guzman Medrano. The only unidentified victim is thought to be of Haitian origin.
