The executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC), who is visiting the Dominican Republic, said yesterday that if the Dominican Republic does invest 4% of the GDP in education, there was a need to identify clear objectives and prioritized programs and the time and cost that these programs will need in order to be implemented. According to Hoy newspaper, Alicia Barcena said that the funds are necessary to resolve, for example, the lack of infrastructure and to guarantee a quality education. When she was asked during a television interview if she agreed with the idea of 4% of the GDP for education, she said that "yes, of course, but with plans". She said that Latin America needed to invest US$50 billion in education over the next 10 years, especially in mathematics. She also said that any new educational spending should be used to create a new and fair society, and not perpetuate the inequities of the current job markets.
