Once again, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Dominican nation remembered the three Mirabal sisters who were brutally murdered during the last years of the Trujillo dictatorship. Minerva, Patria and Maria Teresa were killed on 25 November 1960 after visiting two of their husbands in jail in Puerto Plata. El Caribe says that commemorations included a march from the site where the women were killed to their house in Ojo de Agua, in the municipal district of Salcedo. In response to a request by the Dominican government, in 1999 the United Nations declared the 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in memory of the three "butterflies" who were immortalized in an acclaimed historical novel by Julia Alvarez, which was also made into a movie.
