The United States finds itself in one of the biggest messes in its history, after the WikiLeaks website revealed 251,287 secret diplomatic cables, most of which were confidential and contained sensitive information. The leaked documents included 1,675 sent by the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic, of which 20 dealt with Dominican politicians, two with DR-CAFTA and one with the assassination of a member of the political opposition. (Diario Libre could not access the content of the cables relating to the country, but the full list of cables is published on its webpage.) The leaks were sent to five newspapers, revealing that the United States requested personal data from its embassies and spied on prominent figures from other countries (including presidents), leading the White House to describe them as "dangerous and reckless".
