The 2010 Hurricane Season ends on Tuesday, with what is expected to be a final count of 12 hurricanes, 19 storms but not a whole lot of destruction. Somewhat different from 2009, this year there were four hurricanes in the Cat 4 category with winds of over 210 kilometers per hour (kph). In fact, this year will go down as the third most active and the year with the second highest number of hurricanes. Only 2005, with 15 hurricanes had more, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami (www.nhc.noaa.gov (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov)). The long-range forecasts were very good, and despite the large number of hurricanes, the destruction experienced in 2005 and 2008 was not a part of this year's story. The season's last hurricane was also, quite possibly, the deadliest, with 21 dead in Haiti, 14 dead in St. Lucia and one fatality in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Also, the rains from Tomas were said to have caused 22 deaths in Costa Rica. The season's first storm, Alex, was also deadly and a rare occurrence, since it was the first Atlantic hurricane to form in June since 1966.
