Orange Dominicana and President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated the technical development laboratory for mobile phones, Orange R&D Skill Center, in the Las Americas Technological Institute yesterday. The president of Orange Dominicana, Jean Marc Harion, said that the laboratory "will dedicate itself to research on technological applications for social, health, educational, and energy services and the creation of mobile applications for businesses". Eddy Martinez, the director of the Dominican Republic Center for Investment and Enterprise, CEI-RD, said that the program represents "a leap forward, since the country now becomes a generator of technology". He pointed out that the project could also become a source of "well-paid" jobs for specialized Dominican technicians in the future.

Today's newspapers say that the first project the lab will undertake is the creation of applications for cell phones in partnership with Research in Motion, the developers and makers of BlackBerry phones. The French company signed an agreement for the development of application with the Presidential Office of Information and Communications (Optic) in which it plans to create applications for the government to be able to provide services to citizens electronically. According to Harion, the laboratory is the tenth that Orange has installed in the world and the first to be set up in the Caribbean. The Laboratory will "play an important role in accelerating exchanges between businesses and Dominican universities", according to the Orange president.
