View Full Version : Young Dominican wins International Peace Prize

A 16-year old Dominican girl received the International Peace Prize in The Hague yesterday, from the hands of Nobel Peace laureate Rigoberta Menchu. Francia Simon, from a Batey in the Dominican Republic was awarded the prize because she helped dozens of children get their birth certificates. The birth certificate is needed in order to attend school and obtain medical care. Francia's parents are from Haiti, but she was born in the Dominican Republic. She only registered herself a year ago. In the meantime, she has helped 170 children get a birth certificate.

Rigoberta Menchu told the young girl that "(she) is the flag for thousands of children around the world". The prize of EUR100,000 ($131,000) was donated by the Dutch foundation "KidsRights".
