Traffic accidents continue to be the leading cause of death in the Dominican Republic. Given their frequency they constitute a sort of epidemic and a constant worry for the authorities. Statistics obtained by El Caribe show that so far this year at least 1,000 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents. The latest victims include two young men killed in an accident in Santiago de los Caballeros last weekend. In the Dominican Republic the statistics for these accidents are handled by the National Police, the trauma hospitals, the Casa del Conductor (Driver's House) and the National Forensic Pathological Institute. In 2005 there were 1,295 victims, in 2006, there were 1,486, in 2007 there were 1,750, in 2008, there were 1,854, and in 2009 there were 1,865 according to the numbers provided by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) and published in the now-defunct weekly newspaper CLAVE in March. As an example, the newspaper says that the Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo East has received more than 27,000 patients so far this year and about 7,500 of them have traffic-related. Of these victims, 201 were fatal. Over 4,700 motorcycle accidents and 2,700 automobile accident victims were taken to the hospital.
