A plague in the form of large spiders has infested the area around Bahoruco, causing damage to all the crops in the area, including plantains, bananas and beans. The insect bites are said to cause nausea, fever and headaches, and several people have been hospitalized, according to the papers. El Caribe reporters took a trip around the area and could see spiders everywhere... on electricity wires, in homes, on trees and fences. Julio Lama, one of the largest farming producers in the area told the reporters: "These Haitian spiders damage everything, there is not a crop they don't damage, they are worse than rats". Lucas Perez, the executive director of the No Frontier Foundation said that three days after spraying the spiders come back. He says that no one has done any research to find out which product is the most effective for use against the spiders. However, entomologist Abraham Abud told the reporters that experts in the field should investigate the situation to see what is harming the plantations since spiders are not known to harm crops.
