Dominican rice growers are complaining that their Central American counterparts are in violation of the Free Trade Agreements since they are receiving subsidies and are able to send large amounts to compete with local growers. Miguel de Moya, president of the Rice Factory Association, told reporters from El Caribe that the association has asked the government to review the DR-CAFTA agreement with the Central American nations. De Moya said that the rice that is coming into the country from Central America is subsidized and therefore in violation of DR-CAFTA. He said that there was a lack of transparency in many areas of the free trade agreement and called on the government to step in and prevent farmers and rice mills from going out of business.
