The Dominican Winter League got back under way last night with games in Santo Domingo, La Romana and San Francisco de Macoris. In the capital, the Tigres del Licey said goodbye to the cellar as they defeated the league-leading Estrellas Orientales by a score of 6-5. Lefthander Ryan Ketchner did a good job for the Estrellas, limiting the Tigres to just a couple of hits over five and two-thirds innings, but the relief pitchers could not seal the deal and the Estrellas lost 4-0 and 5-2 leads when Jake Fox hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Tigres their first victory over the Estrellas in this year's tournament. This loss, combined with the Leones del Escogido's win over the Gigantes del Cibao in San Francisco de Macoris, removed the Estrellas from first place and gave the position to the Leones, as the winners 4-3 over the Gigantes. Six errors by the Gigantes led to their defeat assisted by four double plays by the Leones' defense. Meanwhile, over in La Romana, the resurgent Aguilas Cibaenas finally reached the .500 level, a major feather in the cap of manager Tony Pena. Aguilas 5, Toros del Este, 3, behind the good pitching of John Halama and the 3-5 hitting by Hector Luna.
