The Chamber of Deputies approved a US$30 million loan by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) yesterday for the rehabilitation and distribution of electricity. The fund seeks to improve the rate of return of collections by the three power distribution companies n EdeNorte, EdeSur and EdeEste, all government owned. An opposition PRD party spokesman, Nelson Arroyo, spoke out against the passing of the loan, criticizing the indebtedness taken on by the Fernandez administration and the recently announced 11% increase in power tariffs. "The increase penalizes the middle class and the productive sectors, and we cannot back it," he said. The loan was approved with 78 votes in favor and 16 against.

During the same session, the president of the Chamber of Deputies Abel Martinez called for the 11% increase to be revoked. The measure was announced by the Superintendence of Electricity.
