The emergency room at the Moscoso Puello Hospital in Santo Domingo has reported a 50% decrease in gunshot wounds and a 40% decrease in knife wounds one month after the Presidential decrees limiting sales hours for alcoholic beverages were put into effect. It must be noted that this is the hospital that treats the people from some of Santo Domingo's most violent barrios: Capotillo, Cristo Rey, Gualey, Villa Juana, Villas Agricolas, Guachupita, Simon Bolivar, Villa Consuelo and Los Guandules. These are the barrios where the "Safe Barrios" programs were instituted. The hospital report also points out that the number of accident victims has decreased by 93% over the same time period.
In another report in today's El Caribe, the National Pathological Institute reports just seven homicides in the past week. It makes for interesting reading. Just one person was killed in an attempted robbery. A member of the military was killed in a jealous fight. Young Jose Maria Vilomar was killed by members of the police as he resisted arrest, and a Haitian trader was ambushed by unknown assailants in Enshanche Ozama. A Naval officer was killed near the Sugar Cane Monument in the Villa Duarte area, and Ramon Abad was killed by a gunshot wound to the head during a fight with his wife. Finally, Jorge Ramos was shot and killed during a fight that started in a house where a group of young men were mixing drugs. All seven people died of gunshot wounds, one of the lowest totals in recent memory.
