Honey production in the Dominican Republic generates US$2,000,000 a year for nearly one thousand beekeepers, mostly in the northwest of the country. For export, honey is quoted at US$1.00 per kilogram, and is sold in long tons of 1000 kilograms. On the local markets the honey is sold at RD$350-RD$400 per gallon and RD$35 for a bottle. Most honey is produced by small beekeepers in small associations. There are 870 families in 174 associations, according to the Center for Agricultural and Forestry Development ((CEDAF). The leading producers of honey are in the frontier provinces of Santiago Rodriguez, Dajabon and Monte Cristi.
