School starts today

For 2.5 million Dominican school age children, today is the end of their summer vacation. El Caribe and other papers point out that many areas have half-finished buildings or a classroom shortage. Recent reports have emphasized the need to knock down the school houses damaged in the earthquake of 2004. Minister of Education Alejandrina German admitted to a serious lack of classroom space and a need to refurbish many of the nation's schools. She also announced that a school breakfast program would feed 1.7 million children. There are 1,958, 827 children in the public school system and 573,143 kids in private schools. Several public schools will be starting next Monday, and private schools each seem to have their own start date.
