Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa says that an extra RD$4.5 billion will be allocated to the Ministry of Education, in response to widespread national demands for increased funding. He said the funds would be used to build new classrooms, and repair and equip existing ones. He said the funds could not be spent on items like wages or advertising, as reported in El Dia.
He said that funds would also be allocated to new institutions like the Constitutional Court, the Ombudsman and the Higher Electoral Court, as established in the 2010 Constitution, and the farmers' insurance plan.
The Presidency will send an addendum to Congress with the modifications.
Diario Libre reports that the RD$4.5 billion would come from a minimum of 30% of all additional resources received compared to what is forecast for 2011.
He announced that the budget deficit would be 1.6% and that transfers to the Central Bank and the electricity sector added up to more than RD$37 billion.
