A 13-year old Haitian boy who had crossed the border recently became the 13th cholera case reported in the Dominican Republic. He was taken to a public hospital in Independencia Province, near the border, for treatment. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said the patient is in a stable condition and is receiving medical care at the center. He said that fortunately he was found shortly after he crossed the border suffering from diarrhea, in an evident state of dehydration and in need of urgent medical attention.

"The minor is stable and will soon be released from the hospital and sent back to his relatives in Haiti," said the minister.

The Ministry of Public Health has increased health controls at the border with Haiti in order to quickly detect any suspected cases of cholera and prevent the disease from spreading in the DR.
