Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has announced the start of construction of a new submarine cable in the Caribbean this month.
The cable will be operated by LIME, the CWC Caribbean business. LIME is in 13 Caribbean countries and the new east-west cable will mean that it is able to develop a range of new fixed high-speed broadband and mobile data services for its customers. The east-west cable also is intended to enhance CWC's ability to provide customers with increasingly innovative services, like TV delivered over broadband (IPTV) and mobile. The cable would double the British telecom's carrier capacity to meet the rising demand from its consumers and business customers. The cable is expected to be operational by 2011.
The company sees the DR as "one of the fastest growing markets in the region."
In a statement, the company says that they are increasing their level of investment in the Caribbean with the investment in the new subsea cable, the "east-west" cable linking Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the west of the Caribbean, to the British Virgin Islands in the east via Dominican Republic, thereby providing additional capacity to service their growing pipeline of transit carrier opportunities in the Pan-American market.
CWC says it is positioning itself "as the leading wholesale capacity provider through the Caribbean Sea offering primary and secondary routes to New York and Miami".
"Cable & Wireless Communications' network is well positioned to benefit from growth in wholesale markets," it added. "The Caribbean is a major traffic corridor between South America and the major internet, content and carrier hubs in the United States - acknowledged as one of the fastest growing intercontinental routes in the world today."
